business news Xbox Series beats PlayStation 5 in Japan this week
The weeks follow each other and are not alike in Japan. On a good dynamic since the beginning of the year, the Xbox Series has largely exceeded the PlayStation 5 last week in the land of the rising sun. A first since the two new generation machines are available.
The S Series makes the difference
Granted, this isn’t the first time an Xbox console has beaten a PlayStation machine in Japan.. In September 2008, the Xbox 360 had succeeded in beating the PlayStation 3 on its native soil, a first in the history of Sony. While it is unlikely that Microsoft will repeat its feat for the whole of May 2022, the Redmond firm can still be proud of having beaten the two PlayStation 5 models (Standard and Digital) with its Xbox duo Series X|S. Truth be told, the Xbox Series S alone sold twice as much as the two PlayStation 5 editions available in the market between May 9 and May 15, 2022, in Japan..
Console | Sales | Retail |
Switch | 65,322 | 35,868 OLED + 20,443 Standard + 9,011 Lite |
Xbox Series | 6,225 | 6 120 Series S + 105 Series X |
playstation5 | 2,693 | 2,240 Standard + 453 Digital |
Of course, this situation is surely due to the stock problems encountered by the Sony machine, but it is surprising enough to be underlined.. The Nintendo Switch is as usual far ahead by combining the three models available on the market. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will manage to maintain sustained sales over time in a country that has regularly been hostile to it.
It finally happened. Xbox Series S by itself outsold the PS5 in Japan last week (May 9-15).
