news tip Rogue Legacy 2: 10 tips for a good start, our guide

After an alpha phase in 2020 which hit the headlines and particularly displeased the historical players of the first opus and which required many changes, Rogue Legacy 2 is finally released two years later on PC and Xbox Series and Xbox One. Cellar Door Games’ new baby takes up the basics of the first opus by adding new features in order to establish itself as a very good opus in the rogue-lite universe.

Whether you are an experienced rogue-lite (or rogue-like) type game or a beginner, it is important to start your adventure on a good basis. The fans of Rogue Legacy first of the name will certainly not be lost in the universe of Rogue Legacy 2but for people new to the game of Cellar Door Gameshere are 10 tips that will help you get your progress off to a good start.

Summary

  • 1. Take your time, there’s no rush
  • 2. Select your heir well
  • 3. Discover your affinities
  • 4. improve your mobility
  • 5. Test your spells and abilities
  • 6. Optimize your improvements
  • 7. Choose your upgrade runes wisely
  • 8. Train Against Bosses With The Architect
  • 9. Identify secrets well
  • 10. Play Your Way with Custom Rules

1. Take your time, there’s no rush

The first thing to consider when starting a rogue-like or rogue-lite like Rogue Legacy 2, whether Hades, Dead Cells, The Binding of Isaacor more recently ‘ Revita
‘ Where Trigon: To Space Story, you have to take your time. This kind of games is quite demanding and requires some time to adapt to master all its aspects. It is the very principle of “die & retry”, we will have to die to come back better with new improvements that will help us beat enemies more easily. So don’t get too frustrated in your first few games if you die quickly, because the game is designed that way and wants you to die. Only the players most accustomed to this type of game will be able to make clean runs the first few times.

2. Select your heir well

In Rogue Legacy 2at the start of each run you will have a choice between 3 (or more depending on your progress in the adventure) heirs. The game will give you the opportunity to play many hero classes, each with a different weapon, way to attack, special abilities, and scaling on your stats. Also, you will often have heirs who will have traits. When you have never played a trait, you will only have the name of that trait. To discover its effect, it will be necessary to select the heir who possesses it. It’s easy to spot a negative trait, as often your heir will have bonus gold for that run. So it can sometimes be interesting to take a very disadvantageous trait just to make a run in which you will earn a lot of gold, even if you may not survive very long…

3. Discover your affinities

Once you’ve done a few tries, you can start detect affinities for certain classes of heir. These affinities change completely from one player to another, some people will prefer a ranged class while others will prefer a good melee nag. Everyone has their own way of playing, and by often taking a class that you like, you can also improve the level of this class, which will give you advantages, whether in terms of damage or resistances of the class.

4. improve your mobility

During your adventure in the castle and the different lands of Rogue Legacy 2, you will often encounter challenges related to mobility. Whether it’s bouncing off targets to smash or getting to a spot without taking damage. It may therefore be wise to train and master the character’s movements well, whether to control the way he jumps or the “jump kicks” to bounce on certain objects, very useful at many points in the adventure. Luckily, the starting hub gives you targets and a lantern to practice on.

5. Test your spells and abilities

In the game, you will find a significant number of spells and abilities. The two are to be separated. Spells are generally assigned randomly to each heir at the start of the run, while abilities are generally linked to classes. When you start a new game, remember to test your abilities and spells carefully if you don’t know them. This will save you from finding yourself in front of a massive enemy and discovering that in fact the spell you have been assigned is completely useless in this situation. Just like our previous mobility tip, you’ll be able to test your various spells and abilities right at the game’s hub since you’ll find a dummy there like Skelly in Hades who will be just there to take your hits.

6. Optimize your improvements

As in Rogue Legacy First of all, the gold you collect during your adventure will be used to improve your castle. This one has a huge number of different buffs, ranging from improving your base damage, or your crits to improving the max weight of gear you can carry or decreasing the gold you can carry. you will give to Charon before setting out again on the adventure. It may be interesting to focus on some improvements at the start to make the adventure more enjoyable. For example, we would prefer to choose to improve the life of our heir as a priority to survive longer at each run, or its damage to spend less time on bosses having to dodge their attacks. With the improvement of your castle, you will also discover new classes that can be useful and vary your gameplay. Be careful though, because each purchased upgrade increases the price of the next one. So use your gold coins wisely.

7. Choose your upgrade runes wisely

During each of your attempts, you may come across rooms in which you will be offered to make a choice between two runes and others where you will have only one choice. These runes will be ephemeral, they will only be useful during your current attempt. Just like the traits of your heirs, before trying out a rune you will only know their name. At first, it’s a bit like Russian roulette to find out if a rune is essential for your hero. After discovering enough runes during your various trials, you can then take only those that will be useful for you. If none of the runes that are offered to you suit your build, do not hesitate to completely skip the room.

8. Train Against Bosses With The Architect

Some bosses in this second installment of Rogue Legacy will be particularly devious. In order to defeat them, it will take self-sacrifice and patience to learn all of their patterns. It can sometimes be frustrating to have to start a whole level over again in order to have a new chance against the boss that made us suffer so much. This is where the Architect comes in. Unlockable very quickly in the game, this person of a certain age will allow you to lock the seed of your last attempt. If you had arrived at the boss during this one, by using the same seed you will be able to directly access the boss room via the teleporter and show him what you’re talking about.

9. Identify secrets well

Like any good rogue-lite, Rogue Legacy 2 will not be stingy with secrets on your adventure. Generally, these are parts of secret rooms in which you can find chests filled with pesos, components or armor blueprints. To spot them, it’s quite simple, but you will still have to keep your eyes open. You will have to detect the surfaces with cracks, it can be walls as well as the floors of the rooms. These passages will however open only by using a spell. Your class ability or your weapon will not help you.

10. Play Your Way with Custom Rules

Finally, as a last piece of advice, know that the developers of Rogue Legacy 2 have planned an option to change the difficulty of the game. Found in the settings, this option will allow you to lower or increase the difficulty of the game. The developers themselves advise to lower the health of enemies to 90% if you want to play more relaxed or turn it up to 120% if you want a bit spicier challenge.
