Nintendo’s hybrid console continues to mark the history of the industry with its unfailing success.
At the start of the year, we were already learning via Famitsu and gamesindustry.biz that in 2021 in Japan, the Nintendo Switch sold better than all the other consoles combined. With 5.3 million Nintendo Switch consoles against 1.1 million consoles between the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series and 3DS, Nintendo’s monopoly on the archipelago is undeniable.
The Kyoto firm has just broken an impressive new record in its country of origin since the Switch has just exceeded the number of sales of the Nintendo 3DS. The hybrid console then rose to the prestigious position of the third best-selling console in Japan in the entire history of the video game industry.
In just five years, the youngest from Big N has managed to reach the number of sales that the 3DS will have taken ten years to achieve. With no less than 24.6 million consoles having found a buyer on the Nippon archipelago, as much to say that Nintendo has managed to find the winning recipe and that the Switch still has a bright future ahead of it. It is not impossible that it even manages to overcome the astronomical statistics of the Gameboy and the DS which are at the top of the podium with 32.5 million and 32.9 million consoles sold.
Japan Famitsu – “Nintendo Switch Sports” took the top spot with 190,000 units sold, just short of the 354,000 first-week sales of “Wii Sports Resort”, which was released in June 2009. Switch in 5yrs has sold 24.6m and passing 3DS which took 10yrs to hit the same number,DS 32.86m

Popular Console, Popular Licenses
Nintendo’s strength lies in its ability to innovate and use its flagship licenses wisely. The rise of the Switch is explained in particular by the overwhelming popularity from Animal Crossing occurred in the midst of a pandemic, but the console has a package of other licenses which grant it this historic success.
On the Switch there is something for everyone, and no cult series from Nintendo is left out. Of Kirby to MetroidPassing by Pokemon, Splatoon and even retro games in the online subscription, everything is there to satisfy players, old and new alike.
Even the great classic Wii Sports has also made a comeback under the name of Nintendo Switch Sports in an updated version. Real strike for Big N since the game was very well received by critics as well as by players since the game has already sold more than 190,000 copies in Japan.
With the upcoming arrival of Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or even the return of the series of Mario Strickersthe year 2022 promises good surprises for the Nintendo Switch, not to mention 2023 which will mark the release of the long-awaited sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild whose first details have already leaked!
